J. Cannon Carr, Jr
Cannon is CornerCap’s Chief Investment Officer. He leads the firm’s investment committee and oversees the firm’s investment strategies and process, stock and asset class research, and portfolio management. He also co-manages the three CornerCap mutual funds (Small Cap Value, Large Cap Value, and Balanced).
He joined CornerCap in June 2007, after being a client for over seven years. Prior to joining CornerCap, Cannon was a senior equity analyst at CIBC World Markets (formerly Oppenheimer), covering IT business services (2006-07), wireless services (2001-05), and emerging telecom (1998-05).
Cannon has provided commentary on CNBC, CNN, Lou Dobbs MoneyLine, and Bloomberg News. He has also been quoted in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, and Fortune, among other publications. He was rated a five-star analyst by Zachs Research in 2006. Cannon has an MBA from Columbia Business School and a BA from Princeton University in Political Economy.
Public service is important to Cannon. He heads the investment committee for the Wesleyan College endowment, serves on the Advisory Board for the Center for Ethics at Emory University, is a Board member with the Technical College System of Georgia Foundation, is an officer at the Atlanta Rotary Club, and serves as Chair of the Georgia Tennis Foundation, among other nonprofit endeavors.
Jeffrey P. Moeller, CFA
Jeff is CornerCap’s Director of Research, overseeing the day-to-day execution of Fundametrics® and research of the firm’s investment products. He is a member of the investment committee and a Portfolio Manager. He comanages the three CornerCap mutual funds (Small Cap Value, Large/Mid Cap Value, and Balanced). Jeff joined CornerCap in 2000 and served as the firm’s trader for three years. He returned in 2004 as a research analyst. Jeff is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Charterholder and a member of the CFA Institute and CFA Society Atlanta. He has a BS in Finance from Oklahoma State University.
Joshua G. Tucker, CFA
Josh is a Research Analyst and a member of the investment committee. He leads the investment team’s international quantitative research effort and supports the quant and fundamental research efforts of the domestic strategies. He joined CornerCap in January 2014 after completing a research internship with the firm in 2013. Josh holds an MBA from Scheller College of Business at Georgia Institute of Technology and a BS in Business Administration with a major in Finance from Mississippi State University. Prior to business school, Josh worked as a research associate where he was responsible for individual stock analysis as well as macroeconomic research. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Charterholder and a member of the CFA Institute and CFA Society Atlanta.
Derek M. Tubbs
Derek is an Associate Portfolio Manager and the Vice President of Institutional Development for CornerCap. He joined in 2013 with over 16 years of institutional investor experience and is a non-voting member of the investment committee. His primary responsibility is to expand CornerCap’s reach with institutional investors. Prior to joining CornerCap, Derek was a Senior Relationship Manager with a $15 billion equity team at Wells Capital Management where he was the primary point of contact for the largest, most sophisticated and most complicated institutional clients. Derek started his investment career in 1996 and spent the next 12 years in institutional sales with both CIBC World Markets (formerly Oppenheimer) and Prudential Equity Group. He has an MBA from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University and earned his BA with honors from Texas A&M University.
Charles E. Bettinger
Charlie oversees all equity, fixed income and mutual fund trading at CornerCap. He is also responsible for managing all broker/dealer relationships and the various technology that supports the trading function. He is a portfolio manager and a non-voting member of the Investment Committee. Prior to joining CornerCap in 2008, Charlie was an equity trader on the New York Stock Exchange for 10 years with Goldman Sachs. During his time on the trading floor, Charlie was a market maker in such names as AIG, Pfizer, Hewlett Packard and Best Buy as well as being actively involved in numerous IPO’s.
Charlie holds a BA from Boston University and has held the FINRA Series 7 and 63 licenses
John A. Hackney, III
John is Chief Compliance Officer and Operations Manager of CornerCap Investment Counsel. John and his staff’s broad responsibilities include administering CornerCap’s compliance with federal and state regulatory authorities, and maintaining and reporting accurate client account data. Prior to joining the firm in 1995, John worked in risk management at an Atlanta broker/dealer. John has a BA from the University of Virginia and an MAR from Yale Divinity School.
Merriweather K. Mulé
Merriweather is a Client Service Manager for CornerCap and is based in Charleston, SC. She provides comprehensive support to our clients to ensure that all of their account needs are met.
Merriweather previously served in CornerCap’s Charlotte office as a Client Service Manager and Portfolio Manager. Prior to joining CornerCap in 2011, Merriweather was the Investment Analyst for Kiawah Capital, LLC and a Family Services Coordinator for GenSpring Family Offices in Charleston, SC.
Merriweather received a BA in Business Administration from the College of Charleston and is a member of the CFA Institute. She and her family live in Charleston, where she serves on the Event Committee for Communities in Schools of the Charleston area and is a Chi Omega Alumnae member.
Kevin Keeney is Vice President of Information Technology and the Chief Technology Officer for CornerCap. In this role, Kevin manages the technology strategy for CornerCap and leads the development of software used in research. Prior to joining CornerCap, Kevin acted as the Chief Information Officer and Chief Information Security Officer at a national consumer credit organization. Kevin has also managed a team of consultants in enterprise technology as Vice President of Enterprise Applications at Innovative Architects. Kevin is a graduate of California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo (Bachelor of Science, Mechanical Engineering) and Purdue University (Master of Science, Mechanical Engineering) where he focused on machine learning to optimize energy storage in response to market prices.
Gene A. Hoots
Gene is Chairman Emeritus and co-founder of CornerCap Investment Counsel, which was incorporated in 1989. His previous positions included Vice President of Reich & Tang, a large New York City investment advisory firm, and President of RJR Investment Management Inc., the investment advisory subsidiary of RJR Nabisco. Gene also worked in mergers and acquisitions for R. J. Reynolds. Gene is involved with the firm’s investment policies and strategies, and he also works with client development. Throughout his career, Gene has made time to give back to the community by sharing his expertise as Trustee Emeritus for Wesleyan College and as a Board Member of the Jensen Foundation, Broyhill Management Company and Opera Carolina Endowment. Gene is frequently asked to lecture on topics related to investments and the financial markets. He has an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University.
Thomas E. Quinn, CFA, CPA
Tom is CEO of CornerCap Investment Counsel and is a member of the investment committee. He and Gene Hoots co-founded the firm, which was incorporated in 1989. Tom is also President and Treasurer of the CornerCap Group of Funds. His previous positions included being Chief Investment Officer of RJR Investment Management, Inc., the investment advisory subsidiary of RJR Nabisco, and a consultant for Arthur Andersen & Co. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Charterholder and a member of the CFA Institute and CFA Society Atlanta. He is a certified public accountant (CPA) and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). Tom serves as Chairman of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta Foundation and Chairman of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta Long Term Investment Committee for the Diocese’s Common Fund. He is also Chairman of the Midtown Atlanta Rotary Foundation and serves on the Board of the Church Investment Group. He has an MS in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Ohio University and an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
